Representation:
·
It is quite hard to recognise the social groups
from this short film. Social class is represented as we know that the man in
real life earns minimum wage, masculinity is also identified as the well paid
footballers are usually men and in this case the art shop man is also male.
·
The main character obviously is finding the
humour in his job which is going against stereotyping as stereotypically people
who work in an art shop are quite serious about their job and are obviously
very passionate about art.
Narrative:
·
The story of this short film is to make fun of
people who work in art shops and also making fun of football players and the
audience. Showing that football is just a job like being staff at an art shop
so why should people cheer them on etc... and he is also making fun of people
who work in art shops as they stereotypically think highly of their job.
·
The film is linear as it follows the plot and
doesn’t have any flashbacks.
·
The genre of the film is quite clearly comedy as
the main character is joking about footballers and art shop staff.
·
Short films usually have a quite clear and bold
genre and usually use hybridity with genres but I think when I start to do my
short film I will have a specific genre to focus on and then see where it goes
from there. I think it’s easier to stick to a genre with a short film as there
is less running time.
·
This film the genre is obviously as it is
communicated through stereotypes and the actor is very clearly taking the
mickey out of footballers and the elaborated gestures and the voice over being
very sarcastic tells you that this film is definitely comedy. It also links
well with Rick Altman’s semantic theory in which by all these different
elements to the film communicate to us what genre the film is.
Audience:
·
The expected audience for this sort film would
probably be people who enjoy short films as not many people come across short
films randomly.
·
I think the audience would really like the film
as it is a very unique film and I think it would appeal to a lot of people as
it is a comedy.

Representation:
·
The social groups that are represented in this
short film are definitely females as I feel there is a message in the film that
is directed mainly at females.
·
I feel like this is a great film that includes
social realism especially to females as they can really relate towards the
‘insecurity’ factor.
·
The girl is represented in a ‘Disney princess’
traditional girly way which is a very stereotypical of a little girls
imagination of what she would be like when she’s older. On the last date she is
really dressed down, wearing trainers which shows that the man doesn’t care if
she’s not looking her best, he just likes her for her personality.
·
The issues that the film approaches are
insecurity in girls, and expectations a girl comes across every day, the film
is giving advice to girls that feel insecure and telling them that it’s not all
about their looks or personality.
Narrative:
·
The story and outcome of the film is to give
girls confidence on not what they wear or how they laugh but what their
personality is like and no matter how many ‘dates’ they go on, they will always
find someone right for them.
·
The story is linear as we expect something like
that to happen and the story is very much in sequence.
·
The theory I would apply to this film would be
Thompson and Bordwell as the film as the event of the film seem plotted and
were meant to happen.
Genre:
·
Comedy is one of the main genres of the film as
it made me laugh a lot and is very identifiable. The film says it is drama and adventure which
I would agree with because it had a sense of tension.
·
In short films hybridity is usually used as
there is no fixed genre usually.
·
The theories I would apply to this film would be
Rick Altman’s syntactic theory as there
is a common narrative and the film meets expectations . Buckinghams theory also
applies to this film as the genre is hybrid and Buckingham states that genre is
never fixed and negociated by the audience.
Audience:
·
The website where I found the film was virgin
media shorts so I think people that are expected to watch this film would be
people who enjoy short films and also females and/or teenagers as the film
seems like it would appeal to the female audience the most.
·
I think the audience would be really pleased
with the film as I feel it is a very relatable subject upon women’s lives and
being insecure about things.
